Hi everyone,
As team leader of the open Outcast project I'm glad to announce the
release of our first tech demo.
I also want to use this mail as opportunity to thank everyone working on
Crystalspace/CEL, without you our whole project would be unthinkable.
So keep up the good work and cheers to all! =)

Back to the tech demo ... I think I don't have to say that it doesn't
represent the quality of the final product and is neither optimized for
speed nor stability. It gives you however an impression of what we have
been working on for now around three years.
Although the project had it's ups and downs we finally managed to focus
our efforts on this public snapshot and we're really proud we made it
this far.

A little note on the project: the aim of our project is to create a free
action-adventure in the style of the game "Outcast" released in
1999/2000 and developed by Appeal. Because the official successor to
"Outcast" has been canceled ... using Crystalspace and other free
technology we could simply decide to create one on our own! =)

Also the codename for the release is connected to the story of Outcast:
"Gandha" is the essence of the earth and assigned to the working
"talans" in the Outcast world (won't get into detail here) ... so we
wanted to say with this codename "we were working hard and have a basis
to stand on for further releases".
And not to forget that we can show something to people now who might be
interested in helping us out but aren't sure whether the project has a
future at all (since such projects in freetime are always hard). If
you're interested to help us out in any position you can contact us over
the board on our homepage by the way ;)

There are binary builds for both Linux and Windows (Mac might come in
the next weeks too) that can be obtained from www.openoutcast.org

Recommended though is to build things from source and link against
CS/CEL 1.0 and cal3d 0.11. You can obtain all the sourcecode and
gamedata needed for the tech demo via SVN from:
http://svn.gna.org/svn/ooc/branches/0.1

Please don't take the code too serious ... we wanted to show something
to the people, so the next weeks may keep us busy with implementing
stuff cleanly.
Also there might be display problems / crashes / whatever depending on
your hardware/operating system configuration and we won't probably fix
them - remember? It's just a tech demo ;)
If you can really locate a bug and send us a fix proposition however, we
will gladly merge it into the tech demo branch or create some patch for
the binary release.
