This is actually a topic on which we are currently working on.

Probably, the more interesting solution is an importer based on the Open
Asset Import Library. This library can load a rather nice list of
different 3D file formats (see
http://assimp.sourceforge.net/main_features_formats.html), and the plugin
I'm working on allows to load all this data directly into CS, without the
need to deal with exporters such as blender2crystal.

This is still a work in progress, but this should solve in the future all
main problems for importing all base assets into CS (meshes, animations,
morph targets and base scenes). This plugin is available on trunk, it
won't appear in CS 2.0.

Aside from that, Mike Gist has worked on two exporter plugins for 3DS Max
and PnP TerrainCreator, the team from PlaneShift has improved the export
script for 3DS Max, and the team from Peragro Tempus is working on an
asset database system (DAMN, see http://peragro.org/node/87 and
http://wiki.peragro.org/index.php/Tools/DAMN).

In the past, Blender was the main way to import assets into CS. The
blender2crystal project has now fallen asleep, but in the same time CS
gets more and more accessible from other 3D editors. So I hope you will
find what you expect in here.
