Hello,
From 2003-2006, and some years in between, I've been working on CrystalFighter
AKA RoamingDragon. http://www.goodnewsjim.com/js2/work/roaming.html
I worked so far until I had a networked fighter without any known bugs. At
this point, I went on my own to try and find 3d modelers to work for me, but I
could find none. When I realized I had no 3d modelers to work with, I could
not see the game realized and I shelved it.
I'm currently debating what I can do with my time, and I've considered
revisiting Crystal Fighter, but I'd need to have 3d models for anyone to want
to play the game. How do I get 3d models? Are there free ones? Can I
negotiate a profit sharing deal with a 3d artist? Do I need to learn how to do
3d models myself and make them manually?
I believe a MMORPG Tekken style game is doable with 50ms ping times. I believe
it could be fun and profitable, but there is a lot of art work required.
What I can do:
I can advance the game to the point where there are ten fighters to choose
from, and have a variety of 1v1 and team style matches with ladder ratings.
Possibly through having a working game, I might attract artists and level
builders. I don't want to go this route unless I'm fairly certain I'd be able
to attract a 3d artist though, as it would take a few months to put together.
What maybe might be a better use of my time could be:
I could make a Crystal Space 3d map editor where you can be inside the map
while positioning objects, or raising/lowering the terrain. Then I could deal
with stick figure art, but have an open world to explore.
Why I have my reservations:
I could end up spending another year or two, and have a game that no one wants
to play because the art is non-existent.
So I'm looking for advice. How should I attack this project? Should I set it
up a ladder for 1v1 and team based fighting? Should I go straight to MMORPG by
doing a level editor? Does anyone have advice for securing 3d modelers or 3d
models?
,Jim
