re: validate or not: I'll keep using validate. The new SteamCmd tool is several orders of magnitude faster than the older steam command with -verify_all specified, especially once the other thousands of servers are all hammering steam for the update, so I'm not worried anymore about how long it takes to update.
I have had too many probs in the past where NOT using -verify_all led to either a missing steam.inf file, or one that didnt get updated, forcing my servers to get stuck in an update loop. And the answer to that which everybody always said on the list was "you need to update with -verify_all". It was the only way to assure you got an up-to-date steam.inf file. (Now on why this was the case, thats a whole 'nother issue which I notice Valve has addressed by switching to different update tools and content delivery infrastructure. Which so far, knock on wood, has been great.) re: using gamemode_XXX_server.cfg vs. gamemode_XXX.cfg: I'm basically not using either of them. They run AFTER the configured +servercfgfile, rather than before, so I'd rather they not contain ANYTHING because any (re)definition of a cvar in the server's servercfgfile will be overridden. > Use app_update 740 without the validate.
