I don't think what you are seeing has anything to do with the CSS examples being provided. It sounds like it might be quoted printable [01] encoded text that isn't sitting right with your email client.

"3d" is the hex code [02] for the "=" symbol. Because the "=" symbol is also the escape character for quoted printable encoding, whenever the "=" symbol is used as content (within quoted printable encoding) and not as an escape, it also must be encoded as "=3d".

Have you recently changed email clients?
