What about just a span with a class, eg:

With old printing, there used to be a larger space after the period<span
class="doublespace">.</span> But nowadays that space has disappeared and
thus people have started to add 2 spaces after the period<span
class="doublespace">.</span>

That way you don't need a transitional doctype.
