I'll reply to all in one email... Yes, it was the browser cache settings in IE. I was doing some testing on our intranet and I had changed IE's cache.
Before another lister told me the cause I did try the background-position thing with one image and it failed on the first try. Before I could to more testing I found the cause and s-canned the b-p thing. The <li> & <a> image idea is a good one. I might have to try it just to see if it will work. The Sprites article is bookmarked but I probably won't worry about trying it any time soon. I probably could optimize the images and save as GIF. I've never liked GIF and never used it unless I need transparency. JPG usually looks better but in this case GIF might not be so bad in this instance. Thanks...
