Zoe, Audra, Thank you for your responses. I now have a clearer understanding of how elements inherit height from each other.
It seems that if there is a way to do this, it will involve some very clever manipulations of div tags. More than I can figure out right now, so I've opted to go with Audra's suggestion of a simple solid red coloured border for now.
