Good point. Setting the font size on html does work. 

However, one limitation is that  in IE7 blowing up the page with CTRL-+
increases the font size but doesn't move the background across
proportionally. If you but the background on a wrapper div it changes
position in proportion to the font size as it gets blown up or down.
This is what you need if you are going for that faux column effect. 

It looks like somehow the background image position is being calculated
before the font size.
