I have problems to detect if my DTD (and whatnot) are correct.

Since I run into the box model bug in IE6, header data must be wrong -
the bug supposedly only applies to quirksmode. I found this JS snippet

http://www.snippetstash.com/public/126

<script type="text/javascript" charset="utf-8">
if(document.compatMode == 'CSS1Compat'){
alert("Standards mode");
}else{
alert("Quirks mode");
}
</script>

But it seems to not work: output is "Standards mode" although I have the
box model problem.

I tried the IE developer toolbar too, but it doesn't seem to display if
in Quirksmode or not.

How to detect the mode reliably?

What, there is no way to check for quirksmode? Or did I ask wrongly, or indecently?

Regards, Ingo
