Is using images like this fairly prevalent? I'm dumbfounded that a bunch of
images would be placed on a page then masked to only show one. Coming from a
PRINT graphic design background I get irritated to no end when I see files
thrown together like this because the "artist" failed to properly crop the
image(s). Since he's getting meaningful responses this must be at least
moderately common.

I suspect it will boil down to 1 medium- or large-sized image being
downloaded vs a boatload of little ones saving bandwidth. But, again, my
background tells me this is not "the proper" way to do it.

Just curious if I have something new to think about... Which wouldn't be out
of the ordinary.
