Don't have your images be the exact dimensions. I usually use base images at around 600 wide. This covers a wide range of devices. Be sure to optimize your images. At about 600 wide, I swap out my base image for one that is around 800 wide which covers a wide range of tablet devices. At around 750 wide I swap out that 800 image for a desktop sized one. Width varies here based on your preferred max width. Optimize your images.
