Message from Director Martin On Saturday, October 12th, the 2002 National Book Festival will take place on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol and the National Mall. This celebration of books and the joy of reading is sponsored by the Library of Congress and hosted by First Lady Laura Bush. Mrs. Bush and the Library of Congress launched the first National Book Festival last Fall. The festival was highly successful and provided an unprecedented opportunity to promote reading and libraries. This year more than 70 award-winning and nationally known authors, illustrators, and storytellers will be on hand for readings and performances. IMLS is pleased to be encouraging nationwide participation in the event by supporting The Pavilion of the States. Please visit the National Book Festival Web site at http://www.loc.gov <http://www.loc.gov> for more information. ********************************************* 2. An Institute of Museum and Library Services National Leadership Grant for Preservation or Digitization is enabling the libraries to assemble digital copies of posters from their collections in what may become the largest institutional online searchable database of war posters ever. http://www.imls.gov/closer/archive/hlt_l1002.htm <http://www.imls.gov/closer/archive/hlt_l1002.htm> ********************************************* 3. Recruitment and Education of Librarians for the 21st Century Draft guidelines for the Recruitment and Education of Librarians for the 21st Century grant program are available on the IMLS Web site at: http://www.imls.gov/grants/library/pdf/2003Guide21.pdf <http://www.imls.gov/grants/library/pdf/2003Guide21.pdf> . Since February 2002, when the President included $10 million for the initiative as part of his budget request, IMLS has been soliciting input from the library and education communities to shape priorities that are consistent with the scope of the program and best meet library service needs. We encourage interested parties to review this newest version of the guidelines. No deadline can be established for this program until an FY 2003 appropriations bill has been passed by Congress and signed by the President. As of this writing it is unclear when this will happen. However, should funding become available later this year, IMLS will act quickly to set a deadline, issue final guidelines, review proposals, and make awards. ********************************************* 6.
