Paula:

We have a 3M self-check machine at Temple Public. We do use it in conjunction with 3M gates. I’m not sure what the implications would be of not having a security system. I’m thinking it wouldn’t make any difference, but I might be wrong. We find many of our patrons love to use the self-check and will even stand in line to use it when there’s a staff member available. On the other hand, there are some people who will probably never use it. I liken it to pay-at-the-pump. Some folks like to just get their stuff and go, while others are looking for the personal touch. Patrons are referred to the desk if there’s any kind of message on their record, from a fine, to a hold, to an address check, to just a message for the staff to check with the patron about something. They can do their own renewals at the self-check machine unless they’ve exceeded the maximum number, or there’s a hold on it. I don’t remember what automation system you all are using, but you may want to check with your vendor about additional licensing or maintenance costs. There’s a fairly hefty ongoing cost between the Dynix maintenance fee and the 3m fee.

If you want to talk more about this, feel free to give me a call (254 298-5707).

Subject: Self service check out stations

We are beginning to think about the use of self-service circulation check-out stations at two of our branch libraries.  How many of the CTLS member libraries are currently using them?  What has been their experience.  Does it reduce staff time?  Can these check-out stations be used successfully with no security such as 3M or Checkpoint?  Have your patrons been reluctant to use them.  Do you find that the patrons frequently need to talk with a staff person to handle fines due, renewals, etc.?  Any information you can provide us would be greatly appreciated.

Burnet County Library Director
