We just implemented our Express Check Out a few weeks ago and both the staff and the library users love it.  We use Spectrum software and they have a module called UCHeck for about $500.  People like the privacy and are pleased with the simplicity of the process. I think the name Express Check Out is also attractive to people.

It takes just 4 steps - scan your library card, scan the books, scan the done barcode, tear off the printer slip.  We do not have security such as 3M or Checkpoint at our library.  If there is a fine, expired card, etc, they cannot use the Express Check Out and see a message "Please ask the librarian for help with your ....   (problem).  We have the Express unit on the circulation counter, so we can readily explain things or if they need to use the regular checkout, they can just move down the counter. Let me know if you any other questions.  Beth

We are beginning to think about the use of self-service circulation check-out stations at two of our branch libraries.  How many of the CTLS member libraries are currently using them?  What has been their experience.  Does it reduce staff time?  Can these check-out stations be used successfully with no security such as 3M or Checkpoint?  Have your patrons been reluctant to use them.  Do you find that the patrons frequently need to talk with a staff person to handle fines due, renewals, etc.?  Any information you can provide us would be greatly appreciated.
