From time to time we are asked if a librarian can be on the Friends board or if a library trustee can be on a Friends board.  The following message from the former executive director of Friends of Libraries USA (FOLUSA) explains why the answer to both questions is NO.

It's not a library issue, hence ALA's lack of rulings. Just like the librarian does not sit on the Board of Trustees because of the conflict of interest, the librarian does not sit on the Friends Board. Many Friends have decorated offices, sent librarians to conferences, bought special art work suggested by the librarian. The Friends may be supportive of raises for the staff, or additions to it. This is not wrong, but the librarian being on the board would give an opportunity for criticism. It's best to remain in close contact, and warm invitations offered to attend meetings, but keep the Board for Friends. We also recommended that active Trustees do not sit on the Board. Most of this is in the highly researched FOLUSA Fact Sheets and Sourcebook.
And will certainly be in the book I'm working on due out this fall.
Good luck, Sandy Dolnick
