-Caveat Lector- IDA TARBELL RISES FROM HER GRAVE ================================ (CNNS, 12/28/98) -- In the late 1800s, Ida Tarbell wrote her classic muckraking book, "The History of Standard Oil". Ida Tarbell was a classy dame. Anyone who has read her or has read of her knows that she shines, by virtue of her inner goodness. Tarbell was a Lincoln scholar who by fate began investigating Rockefeller's Standard Oil conglomerate. And Tarbell, a Marie Curie in her own rite, pursued Truth in her time, no matter where it led. Ida Tarbell died. Then came a strange "leftism" that cared only for corporations and not for working people. Now, Bill Clinton and his pretend "leftism" is phasing out. In the waiting room is George Bush, Jr. and pretend "conservatism." But unsettling to the fake "left" and the fake "right" is that Ida Tarbell has risen from her grave. She has risen with a vengeance. "WHERE ARE MY CHILDREN!?" her 100-year-old voice demands of the nation's stewards, the preened-and-proper servants left to care for the People in her absence. Those servants, appalled by Tarbell's unexpected resurrection, hide behind the skirts of statisticians and are in a frenzy. "Here's symbolisms!" they reply to Tarbell's demand. Ida Tarbell's eyes open upon a strange new world. Waitresses paid $2.13 per hour. Psychologic overseers using a new management technique, "management by stress"; workers squeezed to exact maximum productivity. No right to go to the bathroom; some workers wearing diapers to deal with the situation. Ida Tarbell now goes by the name of Barbara Ehrenreich. She disguises herself and submerges into the lowliest jobs, then reports on what she's seen. She's a rare bird among "leftists": she's worked. Bill Clinton, who has never, ever, not once in his life, had to work a real job, is dumbfounded. George Bush, Jr., similarly not-a-worker, has "focus groups" analyzing the best symbolisms. Bill and George are scared. This wasn't supposed to happen. Barbara Ehrenreich, nee Ida Tarbell, is raking up the muck when ALL THAT's supposed to be over and done with by now. Read what she has to say in the latest issue of Harper's magazine. ("Nickle and Dimed" by Barbara Ehrenreich. Harper's magazine, Jan. 1999.) Look for it in your local library. + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + INFORMATION PLEASE: Conspiracy Nation News Service (CNNS) is a co-operative effort.
