The original management were retiring and the "new" management people coming in had names like Melvin Laird, Michael Barone, and others who all had connections to Pentagon/intelligence related offices who were propaganda specialists. I think what you have here is the "advisory panel" that wants to assure that the "Digest" will maintain its "Aw, shucks, bucolic, homespun" attitude at the expense of becoming a really updated, informative publication, which is clearly a form of propaganda. It looks like in the past few years that they have realized the fallacy of this policy and are becoming a bit more progressive. This could be also be because they are in deep trouble financially and are doing everything neccessary to survive. A case where government propaganda experts have almost destroyed a once most popular publication for the sake of a failed principal. Unfortunately, the media itself probably does not know how much it is penetrated, and the CIA would not tell us the truth about it. At least, they would not tell us now that William Colby is dead. Probably, the best insights into the question came at the time of the Church committee hearings in the 70's. Even Colby waffled on the subject, but it came out that there were dozens of people planted in the media. Prominent newspapers were asking how many of their own people had CIA connections- they didn't have a handle on this, themselves. Sometimes, the association isn't conscious conspiracy, so much as just the way that the world works. Probably very few readers realize that columnist William F. Buckley, for example, had worked for the CIA, in the Congo. Is he planted in the media as a conspiracy? No. Is it a cozy incest that has negative implications for freedom of press? Of course. Can we trust people like Buckley to tell us the truth about biological war in that part of the world, and not to cover for his old buddies? Hardly. Buckley doesn't need to be on CIA payroll. It's just natural that he gets ahead in the world because of his connections. A lot of the media's problem is self-censorship. Tell the truth, you wind up assigned to the boonies, like the CIA/Crack whistleblower. Or your paper, like the Houston Post, gets bought and shuttered. The Post which never had an unprofitable year in its history, was probably closed because it was telling the truth about CIA connections to the S&L scandal, and truths about the real origins of AIDS. Nixon wanted his billionaire buddy, Richard Scaife, to buy the Washington Post for him, to stop its criticism. Today, Scaife is funding the scheme to use Monica Lewinsky for the very carefully planned-in-advance scandal over which the tabloidized media can obediently slobber. Scaife is also a formerly CIA-connected, far-right figure. As you see, it isn't just direct action by the CIA, at the institutional level, that is the problem. It's a kind of incest, that produces the mental retardation of the media. None of which will matter as technology advances interacting with the Interent. As it stands right now anyone can be a talk show host utilizing Real Audio. *Anyone* The Internet (Freedom) is spiraling out of control happy hands. It can't be stopped. An increasing number of people are demanding the right to form their own conclusions and opinions-period. It's America facing looming democracy and it was/is America that needs the dose. Always and forever we face people and their personal opinions on "molding society." We read the newswires. Editors picking what we may or may not read in papers is over forever. Tons of middle-people are being eliminated between ourselves and news. It'll never go back. Newspapers are worthless in comparison to the newswires direct to oneself. *************************** Câinii latrã, caravana trece. Anyway my concern is that the parrticular "theme" of the predominant form of propaganda is most notably the militarization of domestic law enforcement and positive public relations for same. A most notable example is a movie called "The ambush at Waco". This was clearly premeditated propaganda. Another case in point. The last two days (when many are watching the psychotic cyclops) there have many "documentary style" programs on TLC (a major outlet since it's purchase by ABC) concerning the "capabilities" of domestic law enforcement. Emergency services units was one such production run back to back for approximately 3 hrs. These so-called EMS units are nothing but goon squads, assasins. Supposedly these "thugs" are preparing for domestic terrorism (another frequent theme). Such shows are the effective equvalent of dropping leaflets over a country with the message "Resistance is futile, surrender or be killed". Don't take my word for this. Take some time and study the frequency of the occurrance of this "theme" on a variety of channels. The "propaganda as documentary" is a rather clever ruse seen mainly on such channels as TLC, Discovery, History channel, A&E, etc. Is anyone else seeing this or should my wife re-tie my long sleeved jacket? ;) -- Old Quote; "Necessity is the plea for every infringment of human liberty.
