I have read "The Readers Digest" for about 65 years but an interesting thing
happened after WW2. The original management were retiring and the "new"
management people coming in had names like Melvin Laird, Michael Barone, and
others who all had connections to Pentagon/intelligence related offices who
 were propaganda specialists.

I think what you have here is the "advisory panel" that wants to assure that
the "Digest" will maintain its "Aw, shucks, bucolic, homespun" attitude at
the
expense of becoming a really updated, informative publication, which is
 clearly
 a form of propaganda. >>

Odd, I noticed the same thing, but I interpreted it as the "Digest" becoming
the house organ for the Republican Party. You will notice that it no longer
reprints much of anything (Its hallmark in its pre-super conservative days).
Instead a good deal of its material comes from "contributing editors" like for
instance--Evans and Novak. I'd welcome a return to the old "bucolic" days.
