The Theosophical Society parallel is an intriguing idea; if the "Akashic Record", Shamballa, etc., were the New Age gospel for an era wrapped up in the search for a universal religion, then it makes sense that the Nineties' equivalent should feature political paranoia, alien invaders, and underground military bases, with a few Nazis thrown in for good measure...
