Question:
In this day and age of near-instantaneous communication and streaming real-time audio and video, why--oh why--do JPL observations of the most interesting places in the solar system invariably end up in one of two places...
a) the spacecraft's tape recorder, for "later retrieval" due to unanticipated spacecraft malfunctions, or
b) the deep, dark catacombs of Malin Space Science Systems?
Either way, the data ain't showing up for months.
By the way, remember Europa...Richard Hoagland's main "mainstream" claim to fame...liquid oceans, possibilities for advanced life, etc.? Well, Galileo's hiccuped again on its latest (and last) flyby of Europa, just as it did on previous flybys. Software glitch. (CNN article.)
I've said it before and I'll say it again: I don't care if this IS rocket science...if they were running a for-profit business they would have all been canned years ago.
