-Caveat Lector- Bid to Make Diana's Face a Trademark Turned Down LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's Patent Office has rejected attempts by Princess Diana's estate and memorial fund to turn her face into a trademark, a spokesman said Friday. The decision appeared to have quashed the fund's hopes of stopping makers of mugs, coins, dolls and T-shirts from cashing in on the enormous appeal of Diana since her death in a 1997 Paris car crash. ``The Diana image trademark application was refused,'' said Geoff Sargant, the Patent Office spokesman. ``This means the estate and memorial fund do not have a monopoly on the use of those images.'' Sargant said the office turned down the application because it decided Diana's image was not a product's ``badge of origin'' and had never been used as a trademark while she was alive. He said the Diana Memorial Fund had submitted 52 color and black and white photographs of the late princess as part of the application. A spokeswoman for the memorial fund said any decision to appeal would be made by the executors of Diana's estate. A spokesman for the estate declined to comment. The fund and estate now have until March 3 to appeal against the decision to the High Court in London. The fund's trustees have said they want to raise money for charities Diana championed by licensing images of the late princess' face on a wide range of souvenirs. But the fund itself attracted criticism last year when it branched out into merchandising deals which lent Diana's face, signature and official logo to products such as a low fat spread and an instant lottery ticket. ================================= Robert F.
