Recently I have seen several accusations made against rep. Bob Barr
that he is a racist. This always makes me laugh. For many years he was
the Federal prosecutor in Atlanta. Every time his picture was in the
paper I would wonder whether or not he was black. I understand that I
was not the only one.
My understanding is that he has been accused of being a racist
because he spoke at some political group that had some racist
background. Well, I know from experience that if the Southern Poverty
Law Center says someone is racist, don't believe them. They accuse
everyone who isn't a flaming liberal of being a racist. It is sort of
like believing Joseph Macarthy about whether some one is a communist.
They love to throw around the word racist and will associate anyone who
they don't agree with (or who doesn't send them money) as being
"racist".
Politicians will go to any meeting where they think they might be
able to pick up some supporters. Bob Barr once came to a meeting of a
group I used to attend called "Fully Informed Jury Association". His
helper came around to our table and said "Bob Barr believes like you".
Well, perhaps we agreed on a few things, but even at that table there
was a great divergence in political opinions. During the question period
there was so much discussion in favor of ending the war on drugs that
the leader of our group cut it short. He said something about it
starting to sound like a NORML meeting. Does Bob Barr support the
relegalization of marijuana because he attended our group? Get real.
