According to recent news reports, Albanian gangs are taking over large segments of Italian organized crime, shoving the Mafia aside; and the money they make from drugs, prostitution, etc., goes straight into arms purchases for the KLA. And the Serbs are no better. Slobodan Milosevic is working hand-in-glove with Saddam Hussein to keep the U.S. off balance and trying to juggle two major regional crises at the same time. Milosevic wants a Greater Serbia stretching from Carinthia to the Aegean Sea, and if he has to provoke all-out nuclear heck in the Balkans to get his dream, so be it. With that said, I approve the concept of nonviolent interposition--placing yourself between warring parties to stop conflict. Peace Brigades International (http://www.igc.apc.org/pbi/) has been doing this for many years with considerable success. The key, of course, is to appeal to the humanity of the combatants, which assumes that the combatants are essentially moral individuals.
