@ ON THE SIDE OF THE ANGELS. "Nowadays, when the impulse to push Darwinism
beyond its comfortable boundaries has been revived in fields like evolution-
ary psychology and sociobiology, the scientific anti-Darwinists might just
be worth listening to. Not because they bear a Promethean truth, or because
sociobiology lends itself to eugenics, but because the hard line forces us,
as it always does, to face our weaknesses and shore up our defense." As con-
troversy brews within evolutionary theory, deistic science is looking for a
comeback. What can we learn from the new creationists? See the revealed
truth at: http://www.feedmag.com/deepread/dr189_master.html?alert

: Can we learn anything from creationist, except how to fake evidence and
construct fallacious arguments? If creationism works, why bother evolving?
If we're created, why do we have an appendix, tonsils, sunburn, flatulence?

> FEDERAL REPORT REIGNITES MEDICAL MARIJUANA DEBATE. (CNN) A report by a
federal advisory panel backs up claims by some doctors and patients that
marijuana can play an important role in medical treatment. The report, by
the Institute of Medicine, said that for many, marijuana does have "thera-
peutic value" for pain relief, control of nausea and vomiting and appetite
stimulation. The institute also said that there was no conclusive evidence
that marijuana use leads to harder drugs. Congress: Marijuana 'dangerous' -

> US SENATE BACKS MISSILE DEFENSE SYSTEM. (CNN) The US Senate overwhelmingly
approved a bill calling for a nationwide defense against ballistic missile
attack. The vote marked the most significant bipartisan move toward such a
system since Ronald Reagan introduced his "Star Wars" initiative. On a 97
to 3 vote, the Senate adopted the bill committing the military to deploy a
national missile defense as soon as "technologically possible." This bill
jeopardizes arms reductions, say opponents, and ignores other threats - see

# TIME: Star Wars: The sequel:

: Whether or not Star Wars is built, would you rather attack the USA with
ballistic missiles, suitcase nukes, mailed anthrax, waterborne LSD, Moonie
propaganda, UFO films, crack, abduction & implantation, AIDS, or Madonna?
What would be most effective, most cost-effective, least likely to invite
massive retaliation? Who is controlling US politicians' minds, if any? Why?

*** Hale-Bopp: A cosmic leftover? (AP) Comet Hale-Bopp, which blazed across
the sky in 1997, may be brimming with some of the primordial material from
which the sun and the planets formed more than 4 billion years ago. CalTech
scientists tuning radio telescopes onto the comet's nucleus as it cut across
the solar system found vents spewing a volatile mixture of gas and dust into
space. The images suggest that 15%-40% of Hale-Bopp's mass is primal inter-
stellar material, while the rest has been transformed extensively during the
comet's passage through space. The images are among the finest ever obtained
of a comet with radio telescopes. Let's go catch it and cut it open - see

: What would you do with pristine interstellar material? Would alien craft
hiding behind the comet interfere with sample collection? Would you shoot?

*** DaimlerChrysler unveils concept car. WASHINGTON (AP) DaimlerChrysler has
built a compact car powered by fuel cells that seats five people, goes 280
miles before refueling and travels as fast as 90 mph. The concept car, Necar
4, is the latest demonstration of progress on fuel cell cars as the world's
automakers continue their race to bring such cars to market by 2004. See

: Will pollution-free transport change the world as we know it? Will cold-
fusion or other 'free' energy be needed to effect real changes? Couldn't we
all just stay home and telecommute? Why go anywhere? Do ETs force you to go?
