-Caveat Lector- from: http://home.netvigator.com/~adamspub/punch.htm The Daily Punch ----- Edition No. 204:March 26th 1999 JONNERS IS BACK - BUT FOR HOW LONG? South China Morning Post front man Jonathan Fenby has written to us to deny the clearly observable about-turn of the Post on handling the terminology of the Tiananmen massacre. The extent of the Post's self-censorship on this matter has been catalogued in detail by NTSCMP, especially in 1997 editions. Fenby cites a word count which reveals, he says, wide use of the "m" word but does not respond to our queries to how many times "killings" or "incident" was used instead. There was also no response to our allegation that sub-editors were clearly advised to suppress "massacre" in favour of euphemisms. All in all it looks like another of Fenby's attempts to rehabilitate himself after completely losing it at the Post for the last two years, ruining what looked like a creditable journalistic CV. Perhaps someone has raised his record in Hong Kong during job interviews. Jonathan Fenby wrote: > Dear Dr Adams, > Congratulations, you've done it again in your Punch for March 23. > Library checks show that we have used 'massacre' to describe June 4 > more than 200 times since the handover. I have the news about the massacre directive direct from one of your sub-editors. How many times by the way did you mention "killings". This is old stuff. We have cited enough examples of the Post's self-censorship on this one. See our archives. Everyone else does! Jonathan Fenby wrote: > How do you square your 'directive' with the 200 mentions? Just give me a > straight answer for once, would you. Yours Jonathan Fenby The answer is that no one follows what you say, probably. But answer me this question - or maybe the new editor can - how many times did you say "killings"? My recollection of June 4, 97 or 98 is that there was only one mention of massacre - in an obscure position. As I say, this is all old hat. We can all do word counts. If we bother to save copies of the Post that is...Here in Tai Hang I'm the only one for miles not to put it straight under the dog. NEWS UPDATES WITHOUT THAT SPECIAL POST SPIN!
