It's always awkward, and usually unwelcome, for a journalist to become part of
an story he's covering. It just happened to me in a case I wrote about last
year: A criminal prosecution of a member of the cypherpunks list for allegedly
posting threatening email that mentioned federal officials.

The Department of Justice today subpoenaed me to testify next Monday in the
trial, which is in US District Court in Tacoma, Washington. (Feel free to show
up if you're in the area. I should be one of the first witnesses that
morning.)

I wrote a three-part Time Digital Daily article on the case, which is pretty
interesting:

  http://cgi.pathfinder.com/time/digital/daily/0,2822,610,00.html

The DoJ wants me to testify about my research and information about the case I
collected.

At least I made the government work hard for this. My lawyer made sure Janet
Reno personally approved this particular subpoena, which is required under DoJ
rules when a journalist receives one.

PS: In other news, the post-CFP party was a blast. About 150 people showed up,
and the most ardent partygoers didn't leave until 4 am.
