Huang Asserts Fifth Amendment
Tuesday, April 13, 1999; 4:57 p.m. EDT

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Former Democratic fund-raiser John Huang asserted his
Fifth Amendment rights against self-incrimination Tuesday and declined to
answer questions in a civil lawsuit, a conservative legal group said.
Huang testified in a deposition for a freedom-of-information case filed by
Judicial Watch. The organization contends that Clinton administration
officials at the Commerce Department, where Huang once worked, gave seats
on trade missions to heavy campaign contributors for the Democratic Party.
Judicial Watch also asserts that while on the missions, officials came in
contact with Chinese agents linked to illegal Democratic contributions.
Larry Klayman, head of Judicial Watch, said he asked Huang in a deposition
whether he had provided truthful testimony earlier in the case and whether
he had produced documents required by a subpoena.
Huang pleaded Fifth Amendment rights to both questions, Klayman said.
Huang's lawyer, Ty Cobb, was not immediately available for comment.
The deposition will resume April 15.
