I can see the trial lawyers now gearing up to sue any company where an employee has a heart attack that doesn't have an OSHA "recommended" wellness plan in effect. Get ready for mandatory exercise programs at companies to protect themselves from such lawsuits. They might even have to manage individual diets if they have a company cafeteria. Far fetched? I don't think so. - JR

(CNSNews.com) - The American Heart Association is teaming up with the federal government in an effort to reduce heart attacks and strokes in the workplace.

The American Heart Association on Thursday announced it had signed a "formal alliance" with the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

Under the agreement, the two organizations will "share best practices and technical knowledge on the prevention, management of risk factors, recognition of warning signs, and actions for early treatment related to heart disease and stroke."

"We are excited about this opportunity to work with the American Heart Association to further the protection of worker's health and safety," said OSHA Administrator John Henshaw in a press release.

He noted that the American Heart Association has significant medical expertise that OSHA can tap into, to reduce instances of heart disease and stroke suffered by workers.

"This truly can be a life-saving alliance," Henshaw said.

The American Heart Association's CEO M. Cass Wheeler commented that, "Protecting workers from these illnesses not only leads to greater productivity; but more importantly, allows them to spend healthier, happier times at home with their families."

The agreement signed Thursday calls for OSHA and the AHA to develop training and education programs on automated external defibrillators in the workplace.

The two agencies also will work on "employee wellness" guidelines that can be incorporated into workplace safety and health programs.

Exercise and weight management are key elements of heart attack prevention.
