--- Begin Message ----Caveat Lector-http://www.maxxsystems.com/cascade.html * go figure.. you got it.. that was easy. > http://www.maxxsystems.com/cascade.html " The Cascade Theory of Events " The loss of life among the passengers aboard the Titanic wasn't caused by the ship just hitting the iceberg; Rather the tragedy was the end result of a series of events known as a cascade. Advanced students of persuasion have learned that a sale (an end result) is not made or lost by only one gesture, but rather occurs or doesn't occur after what is known as a cascade of events. The power of the cascade is hidden in the fact that all events contained in it need not be perfect or perfectly performed in order to work. The cascade allows a certain margin of error while still working quite effectively (most of the time) because no single element makes or breaks the end result. The Real Secret The secret is guidance. For any controlled cascade to produce a desired result, 100% efficiency is NOT required because it is being actively steered. (It has a target). Many times just coming close to the target is more than enough to completely persuade an individual to take some specific action (for an ethical reason, naturally). Hence, if you slip, you can still complete the transaction unless a fatal mistake is made. (A mistake is an error that cannot be corrected. A fatal mistake is a error that completely ruins any chance of reaching the outcome that has been selected. It happens. You can't win them all. Outside of fatal mistakes, no one single error can stop the outcome being planned. Do you follow me on that? Just don't dwell on the error; correct it and move on quickly. Legitimate errors should never be apologized for; at least not in so many words. Rather position yourself as an observer of the error and as the most logical person to immediately correct it. Be advised, we consider the rules not terribly flexible here. You really shouldn't say anything on the Taboo List under any circumstances; ever. Example: A person misplaces an important document and jeopardizes a business transaction. Instead of saying he's sorry he says," This is a terrible thing that has happened. With your permission, I'm going to began fixing it right away. OK?" or "How could such an error happen? Let's fix it immediately, ok?" Never forget to steer a cascade properly if you set one in motion, because it will always go somewhere and is a powerful tool with no conscience. Steering should start right after you decide on the goal. All planning is steering. Knowing what you want and measuring progress is steering. Even selecting meeting sites is steering. Consider yourself in a Chess match. First, you would position your pieces then attack using a carefully thought out plan. A more sophisticated steering technique might be the deliberate flushing out of the real objection to your proposal up front rather than waiting for it to come up more naturally at the end. Knowing that a deal breaker will occur late and making sure to cover it early is a good example of steering. Take heart, here's the good news, Just knowing the theory of cascade steering will automatically help you see the bigger picture and with just a small effort you can begin to take control. _______________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
