UN envoy Terje Roed-Larsen has warned that the Middle East could
see full-scale war.He said a fresh effort was needed to contain the
current violence, or energetic diplomacy to try to bring peace.
"The picture which emerges is very dark, and apparently getting
darker," he said.
"Whenever a virulent form of any religion <including Christianity>
has engaged the machinery of the State --– and by that, I’m talking
about the armed forces, where the sticks and stones are that break
our bones -- we end up with oceans and oceans of blood. And it’s

REPORT: U.S. DECIDES AGAINST IRAN STRIKE
The Bush administration has decided not to strike Iran's nuclear
facilities.
Administration sources said President George Bush has decided that
barring a "catastrophic development," the United States would not
attack Iran. The sources said the administration has been relaying
the decision to U.S. allies in the Middle East.

A senior Japanese diplomat said to me, last year, "You know the
United States is a twelve year old with a shotgun". And what he
meant was that as the United States begins to suspect that it's
past the apogee of its trajectory, its on the way down, as a great
power no longer on the way up or at the top securely -- that the
U.S. is becoming extremely erratic, lashing out in all sorts of
ways to try and slow or stop what it perceives as incipient decline.
So there is concern that we're getting into rather deep water here,
that we may be going into an era where the Americans become highly
unpredictable and quite dangerous.
