# 'Switching off' disease. (BBC) US Scientists may have found a new way to
combat bacterial infection in the fight against diseases that kill millions
worldwide. It might even provide an alternative to antibiotics which are
becoming less effective as bacteria develop resistance to our most effective
drugs. http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/sci/tech/newsid_337000/337120.stm

: What diseases would you like to switch on or off? In whom? Besides curing
some diseases, will this also be an effective bio-war weapon? Who'll use it?

*** University ends psychosis study. CINCINNATI (AP) - The University of
Cincinnati has dropped psychiatric studies in which patients were given a
chemical that may cause psychosis. The study that raised concern was a 1997
clinical trial in which 13 patients who were delusional or hallucinating
were asked to take amphetamines, which can make the symptoms worse. Giving
people chemicals that may induce psychosis - a severe form of mental ill-
ness - was intended to help researchers learn how psychosis happens. See

: Would you voluntarily go psychotic? Do you take consciousness-altering
drugs? Do you hallucinate? Do you need drugs to hallucinate? Do the voices
in your head run your life? Are they stimulated by drugs, implants, rays?

@ How was antigravity harnessed? "No discussion of antigravity would be
complete without discussing the discoveries that allowed humanity to harness
the repulsive force. In 1999 again, it was discovered that the antigravity
effect could be duplicated in a laboratory by spinning atomic nuclei at very
high speeds. An atom's nucleus is ultra-dense, not so unlike a tiny black
hole. Because nuclei rotate fairly stabily and without friction, it is pos-
sible to accelerate their rotation to their maximum speed and produce very
strong antigravitic effects." www.ufomind.com/misc/1999/may/d06-001.shtml

: Have you experimented with antigravity lately? Does it work? Is it fun?
Are you funded by national security agencies, doomsday cults, aliens, nuts?

*** Scientists may learn from tornadoes. LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) Amid the rubble
of Oklahoma, scientists hope to find clues to unlock the mysteries of deadly
tornadoes. The system that tore through the state might be especially revea-
ling because it produced so many twisters and was tracked for so long by
radar. "There are many things that are special and even historic about this
storm," said Texas Tech meteorologist Steve Weinbeck. Researchers from Texas
Tech hope to find the Holy Grail of tornado research - the key to using
radar to predict the path of the twisters. While storm chasers traditionally
are interested with what causes one storm to produce a tornado while another
fizzles, "rubble rooters" in Oklahoma are trying to find better ways to warn
people which tornadoes are going to pose a serious threat. See

: Will predictable tornadoes become entertainment events? Would you watch,
surf, stop a predicted tornado? Would you use tornadoes a weapons? On whom?

# Revealed: How the brain calculates. (BBC) Researchers have produced new
evidence about how the brain handles mathematics, which might help improve
teaching children who have difficulty with numbers. They have established
that 2 very different brain functions are involved - as previous studies of
brain-damaged patients have hinted. One is a non-verbal, visual and spatial
sense of quantity - the other has to do with symbols related to language.

: How does *your* brain calculate? *Does* your brain calculate? Do implants
interfere with calculation? Do the voices in your head whisper the numbers?

"This land has been ours" sternly intoned the Indian Cheiftan Sneaks-Around-
Quietly-In-The-Dark, "since the world was created and the Great Spirit sold
it to us for eleven kilograms of sulphur dyes; and you palefaces have signed
a treaty stating that it is ours as long as the grass grows atop the buffa-
loes, as the beans fly south for the winter, as the fish chant maledictions
at the unfeeling sky, as the mangy horses chew the fat with the sluggish
squirrels and the mechanical albatross of the night, as the iridescent wom-
bats catch cold from the undercooked pasta served them by the Great Spirit,
as long as the world as we know it continues to exist! -- so by what legal
right do you try to take it from us?" --Bard Bloom
