-Caveat Lector- CHAMPAIGN WAREHOUSE FIRE WAS ARSON? =================================== (CNNS: Champaign, Illinois; 05/13/99) -- A late afternoon fire which destroyed a lumber supply warehouse in this small city may have been due to arson. Authorities and local news media in this heartland community are guardedly allowing that "arson has not been ruled out." Local fire department spokesperson Eddie Bain, after being asked whether arson possibly caused the blaze, reportedly replied, "Any time you have a fire that burns that fast, and fully involves the building, that's always a concern." Further raising suspicions that the conflagration was due to an underworld "torch job" are the facts, as stated in the local newspaper, that the building was leased to a local lumber supply company which had already pretty well vacated the premises. At the time of the suspicious fire, only a few truckloads of supplies yet remained in the building. According to one witness, "the building was pretty much of an eyesore... pretty dilapidated." Thus there is a clear motive on why disreputable characters may have been hired to torch the crumbling warehouse. Why pay big bucks for a demolition crew, when a sudden fire will save such costs and even possibly garner a profit, due to fire insurance benefits?
