Mohamed al-Fayed: Denies role in leaking MI6 names
A Conservative MP intends to raise in the House of
Commons allegations Mohamed al-Fayed was involved
in leaking MI6 names on the Internet.
Gerald Howarth MP hopes to prompt
a security investigation into the
Harrods tycoon by tabling the
parliamentary motion.
His intervention follows the
emergence on the Internet of a list of
116 people allegedly involved in secret work for the
security service.
Mr Howarth claimed an
e-mail posted on the Net
bore striking similarities to
comments made by Mr
al-Fayed about his
suspicions over the Paris car
crash that killed his son Dodi
and Diana, Princess of
Wales.
"Readers of the Sunday
press will have seen the
extraordinary similarity
between the remarks which
Mr Fayed himself made, out
of his own mouth, in an interview about a week ago with
the Sunday Times, which echo remarkably the e-mail
published by Executive Intelligence Review," the MP told
the BBC.
Mr Howarth told BBC News Online he intended to table a
parliamentary question to the home secretary and put
forward an early day motion setting out his concerns.
"I'm calling on Fayed to repudiate under oath allegations
he had responsibility for the leak," he said.
"I would have thought the pressure is building for Fayed
to be interviewed."
Mr al-Fayed's spokesman denied the Harrods boss had
any involvement with the former MI6 agent Richard
Tomlinson, accused of revealing the information
published on the Net.
He insisted Mr al-Fayed - who has
described himself as 99% certain the
Paris crash was not an accident - had
a right to demand secret files related
to the death of his son.
"All Mohamed as a father who lost his
son wants to know is the full facts behind the crash," the
spokesman said.
"We know the CIA tracked the couple, every move was
monitored, their phone calls were tapped.
"As a mother of the future king, Diana was being
watched the whole time, she was under constant
surveillance.
"Now, if MI6 has something
on their files which will shed
light on what happened, that
information should be made
public.
"If they had nothing to do
with the events in Paris, then
Tony Blair or Robin Cook
should get up in the
Commons and say so."
The spokesman confirmed
Mr Tomlinson has
approached Mr al-Fayed
about the crash.
The former secret agent had been told to give his
information to Judge Hervé Stephan, who is leading the
French inquiry into the incident.
"Just because Tomlinson sought out Mohamed with
information about the crash and was directed to go to
the judge, it doesn't follow that Mohamed is going to
publish the names of spies and put lives at risk.
"Whatever you read in the papers, Mohamed has led a
law-abiding life here for 35 years. This is the country he
loves, he's not going to betray it."
Mr Howarth dismissed this defence by Mr al-Fayed. "He
has made some wild allegations and it is incumbent on
him to produce evidence, which he has not done," the
MP said.
"He's a thoroughly undesirable menace on the British
business and political scene."
