THe *real* issue in the "training flight" crashes of the Apaches is that Bell
Helicopters screwed up the design. The machine meets DoD specs for
rate-of-climb all right--but only when flying empty, pilot only, no weapons,
minimum fuel. Fully loaded, the chopper has a *negative* rate-of-climb--that
is, it's more likely to go *down* (hard!) than *up*. Cobras or even Hueys
would be more useful in combat. ISTM that the Army brass are protecting their
cronies at Bell...and blaming the training command instead. (Why, you ask?
Well, there aren't going to be any cushy jobs in the training command after
they retire, are there?)
