V.O.I.C.E.S. Conference 1999

The V.O.I.C.E.S. conference was held in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, May 20 - 23.

In S.M.A.R.T. Issue #22, I discussed some of the occurrences of the 1998
V.O.I.C.E.S. in Evanston, IL, including the fact that only half of my presentation
was recorded and how I was not allowed to speak at VOICES in San Francisco in
1997. The person choosing the speakers told me that I was not allowed to speak
because I talked about (alleged) Masonic ritual abuse. A senior person at VOICES
apologized to me and said I should resubmit a proposal for next year (1998). I did
and was accepted.

Another topic I discussed in 1998 was the rejection of my letter to VOICES' Chorus
(a newsletter) responding to a VOICES' Chorus article about Dr. Colin Ross (a
member of FMSF).

I mentioned that I do not want to divide or weaken the movement, but I wanted to
put some light on some of the problems within the movement in a constructive and
healthy way. I hope that in the future conference coordinators of all survivor
conferences will learn more about mind control and how triggers can be used to
hurt survivors, so that survivors will be safer at all conferences.

The conference coordinator for the 1999 conference promised me that I would be
able to speak at the 1999 conference. I made travel arrangements to the 1999
conference based on this promise. When I saw the schedule for presenters at the
1999 conference, I didn't see my name. After several inquiries, I found out I was
not going to be a presenter. The conference coordinator told me that another
V.O.I.C.E.S. official was deciding who would be speaking.

Several reasons were given for the rejection of my presentation proposal for the
1999 conference. One reason, was that my presentation was rejected was that it was
received late. I mailed it to the conference chairperson approximately 21 months
before the 1999 conference. I was told there were complaints about my workshops.
Almost all of the evaluation forms I saw from the 1998 workshop were positive.
I assume one reason for the rejection of my proposal was the discussion of Colin
Ross and the rejection of my 1997 proposal during my 1998 presentation. I was told
that there were no rooms available for my presentation. I know that was not true,
because I saw one room open while I was there. I also suggested that I could find
a room for my presentation. This request was not accepted.

V.O.I.C.E.S. sent me a letter of apology for my not being a presenter in Ft.
Lauderdale this year. My goal is that S.M.A.R.T. and V.O.I.C.E.S. will be able to
work together in the future to continue to work together to fight against child
abuse in all its forms.
                                   Article

The following article comes from a survivor. Please use caution while reading. It
may be triggering. It has been edited for legal reasons. Please note: all
accusations are alleged.

Thank you for the up dates on your past issues. I found them to be very helpful.
I do want to say how pervasive this problem is.

I'm 46 years old, married twenty-six years, and have two children. Both boys.
I have been remembering satanic ritual abuse now for more than ten years. I find
it interesting reading about the FMSF and how they have (allegedly) distorted the
truth. Repression of memories is a reality. There are so many documented cases.
It sickens me to see they still have people believing them. I know for myself
after being in a survivor's group for six years. I had the privilege to have
personally participated in confrontations in the prison where I have now lived for
more than four years. I found this to be very empowering and helpful in
evaluating my own abuse. I listened to the offenders tell me their first names,
who they had abused to be imprisoned for and what type of abuse they perpetrated
and for how long, and the sex and age of their victim/victims. Then they told me
how many others they had victimized before getting caught. It was interesting how
and when they decided to make amends with a victim they had not previously been
able to say they were sorry to, a strange thing happened. One prisoner said the
person was his sister now older, how she didn't remember being abused by him. How
bad he felt telling her this. How horrible he felt, how his sister would now
have to deal with this well kept secret from herself. This was not an uncommon
story. I found out from the prison therapist. He confirmed this to be true.
There are so many stories of confirmed convicted offenders who were involved in
several cases of abuse. I needed to hear that people who Satanic ritually abused
children and adults were convicted of their crimes.

My story is in someway the same as others. I don't know the exact places of where
mine took place. My father was my first abuser. He had close personal friends
who became my Godparents even though I was not baptized until right before my
conformation in the ninth grade. I was brought up in an all white community in
the year 1952. I have one brother and three sisters. None with any memories of
any abuse. They are all married and have children of their own. I grew up not
having very many memories of living with my family except for a few. Most of the
ones I remember are: who I grew up with in the neighborhood and went to school
with and where I went to school and some events of past Holidays. I remembered
some stuff about playing with my little sister but not much. I had photographs
that my parents would take out and sit around the table and tell stories about
who, what and where this and that happened. Those were my memories.
I had repressed my memories for years, up until the age of thirty-six. Like
others it came out after being in therapy. But I was in marriage counseling for
about three years before our councilor mentioned that she felt I had my own issues
to deal with and would I like to have a therapist of my own to talk to. I agreed.

I'm only going to say this once. My therapist asked me only one time if I was
abused. Sexually or physically. That was it. I told her "no" and we went on
talking about the alcoholism I was dealing with in my relationship with my husband
and parents. This went on for some time. I became active in groups and felt
great. Things in therapy were going fine. I know that in all that time I don't
remember ever hearing a person talk about sexual abuse, seeing it on talk shows
or reading about it in magazines or books. It wasn't a topic I felt remotely
close to. I had no friends that ever brought the topic up. Nothing! Then about
a year into my therapy I started feeling a lot of anxiety and fearful but I had
no reason to have these feelings, I thought.

One day I walked into the agency and waited in the waiting room for my therapist
to come out of a session and I was so tense I couldn't stand it. I started
feeling like I was in another world. The room had redbrick walls and green
carpeting and chairs. The room felt like it was closing in on me and the green
chairs and floor changed from olive green to a florescent green. It glowed
brightly! My anxiety was feeling out of control. Like someone was going to kill
me and it was totally crazy to be thinking that way. The minutes seemed like
hours. Then her door opened. She had been running behind she said. A crisis.
I told her to expect another one. She said, "what do you mean." I explained to
her what I was seeing and feeling. It got worse as I spoke. I started feeling
things I never felt before. She said I had PTSD. Everything she said that day was
like listening through cotton in my ears. Nothing made sense. I was scared and
frightened. With new understanding why this was happening now. My therapist said
she felt I needed to be hospitalized. I wasn't going to argue with her
considering I was in no condition to go anywhere. My therapist called my husband
and asked to see him right away. Needless to say that's where it started.

Now having been diagnosed with DID after my second time in the hospital because
I kept shrinking into a five-year-old. My therapist wasn't positive about it.
It took them a long time to make that decision. Lots of tests to rule out other
possibilities.

Ten years later and about twenty hospitalizations with the diagnoses of DID, I
found out I was sexually abused by my father within the first four months after
being hospitalized the first time. My father's brothers, sister and his friends
who I remembered later also belonged to the satanic cult who also abused me. They
were located where I was born. I moved with my family at the age of nine months.
The incest started at that age. The cult abuse continued until my eighteenth
birthday. My father's friend was from where I was born, also. He and his wife
were involved along with my dad and relatives. It was a combination of Satanic,
Nazi and KKK all rolled into one alleged cult. Major pornography ring. As many
as three to a hundred followers would meet at a time for a ritual. They used
different ways to control me. Sometimes with drugs, mind control methods using
crystals, white lights, death threats as well as electrical shocks. That's just
some of the ways. They had abused women, children, teens, and people of different
races and religions.

They used me to experiment on. Got me pregnant at the age of fourteen and used
the fetus, for a sacrifice. They tied me up and gagged me to keep me quite and
kept me in small places like pits, cages, and closets. Sometimes put me in
coffins and inside empty graves with snakes and dead corpses. They did their
rituals out doors in fields, wooded sights, caves, warehouses, abandon churches,
basements of homes and underground the cities water system. Any where they could
meet secretly. Back rooms of bars. Too many places. I want to find out if
anyone knows if they were in the same cult. I know it is dangerous to give names
so I won't. I wish someone would get in touch with me if they remembered being
in the same locations. I have met with many survivors over the years who have
been through the same stuff. I don't wish to prosecute my perpetrators. That is
not my intent. My father and his family are all dead. Including his friends.
So, I couldn't even if I wanted to. I just wanted to know if there was the
slightest chance anyone has been abused by a cult in these locations (Southern,
CT, Catskill Mountains area NY). You may publish my story if you like or keep it
and pass it on. Silence is a perpetrator's best friend.

                              Memory Validation

The information for the following article came from "Memory, Trauma Treatment, and
the Law" by Brown, Scheflin and Hammond, W.W. Norton and Co. New York and London,
C 1998 (http://www.wwnorton.com) Page 370-381 and is written by the editor of
S.M.A.R.T.

The base rates for memory commission errors are quite low, at least in
professional trauma treatment. The base rates in adult misinformation studies run
between zero and 5 percent for adults and between 3 - 5 percent for children. Out
of about seven to 10% of the general population that may be highly hypnotizable,
four to 6 percent of high hypnotizable subjects may "produce hypnotic
psuedomemories for peripheral details (of a memory) in response to suggestions"
in a waking state or hypnotized with controlled situational influence. The 4-6
percent may rise in terms of report rates to 80% under some conditions of social
influence. Extreme social influence can be compared to brainwashing or social
influence to the following criteria, several of which must happen for the
possibility of an untrue memory to occur: patient is highly suggestible (in terms
of memory), with low to moderate suggestibility a therapeutic situation must
contain a number of the following: patient is quite uncertain about the past
event, suggestions of peripheral details (not central plot actions of a memory),
source credibility (an authority figure), patient bias (previous information),
authority figure bias (has set belief about what happened), systematic misleading
(rather than free recall), emotional manipulation (blame or rejection for not
producing the desired result or praise for the desired result), behavioral
response (individual journal or oral narrative to group of trauma or action
against perpetrators), milieu control (total information control in and out of
therapeutic or other context) and psychophysiological manipulation (breaking down
the subject's defenses, assaults self esteem or person's core or causes subject
to regress).

"Occasional unwitting misleading suggestions (Yapko, 1994a), even the suggestion
of a diagnosis of abuse, cannot adequately explain illusory memories of child
sexual abuse." (p. 379) Occasional suggestions about abuse are not generally
effective, except in highly suggestible people.

Some child abuse interrogations might come close to some of the above conditions.
Those that have retracted claims due to influence from their accused families, if
they have internalized the systematic information of the FMSF, and were coached
by FMSF members may also meet many of the above criteria of social influence.

Three to six percent of people possess a trait of high memory suggestibility
(related or unrelated to hypnotizability). They may make errors for at least
peripheral information, but under the certain social conditions listed before
they might make errors for central information also.

One to two thirds of people could possibly make memory errors in an interrogatory
social interaction with many of the social influence conditions listed before.
About one third of the population are resistant to memory commission errors except
under extreme conditions.

My conclusion is that memory contamination is very unlikely, except under extreme
conditions. From the data presented, it sounds like it is almost totally
impossible for anyone to make a memory error for the central plot of a memory
simply by hearing disinformation. A variety of other factors would have to be in
place. Even under hypnosis without several social influence factors, it sounds
like it is extremely rare (4-6% of 7-10%, less than one percent of people) may
be influenced by disinformation.

It sounds like most people would almost have to be in a cult or in a cult like
situation or under considerable duress to produce an untrue memory. Theories that
claim that an untrue memory can be created simply by hearing an untrue statement
or because a person is looking for "filler" to complete the central plot of their
memory, are probably false.

But, if all the information in the media and society available to most survivors
is biased toward the false position that memories of abuse are false and a
survivor is manipulated and pressured by their family emotionally and cognitively,
it is very possible that a survivor may believe (falsely) that their memories are
false.

Information on APA Article

The following article came from information from a FRC media article, 202-393-2100
and articles by Julia Duin in "The Washington Times."

Several congressmen and media representatives are upset about, "A Meta-Analytic
Examination of Assumed Properties of Child Sexual Abuse Using College Samples" a
"pedophilia" study printed by the American Psychological Association, in their
professional journal "The Bulletin." NAMBLA, The North American Man-Boy Love
Association which advocates laws to permit sex between adults and "consenting"
children, hailed the study on their website as "good news." One of the authors of
the study, Robert Bauseman, Ph. D. (a psychology professor, at the University of
Michigan), has an article in "Paidika, The Journal of Pedophilia," from the
Netherlands advocating sex with "willing" children. Bauseman also wrote a special
issue on sex between men and boys in 1990 by the Journal of Homosexuality called
"Male Intergenerational Intimacy." It questioned the "taboo" against "man-boy
sexual relationships." Other coauthors of the study include Bruce Rind (Temple
University psychology professor) and Philip Tromovitch (doctoral student at
University of Pennsylvania).

Several people are challenging the APA to condemn the study. The study is a
compilation of 59 studies on how college students cope with child sexual abuse.

Mormon Article

The following article comes from information from the Houston Chronicle, 5/10/99
by Paul McKay called "Mormon psychologist's recanting about the church flaw
puzzles some." All accusations are alleged.

Arleen Cromwell, a psychologist and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day
Saints
originally detailed in a sworn affidavit a pattern showing where
sexually abused children had been shunned or mishandled by Mormon bishops. She
agreed to testify against the church in a lawsuit. The bishops had failed to get
the children the professional help they needed.

She said the bishops often made, "little effort to ensure the safety of victims
or failed to report abuses to appropriate state authorities." She had treated 300
abuse cases in Utah. She offered to provide free training for the bishops, but was
turned down by the stake leader.

In June 1998, Cromwell backed off the statement, as a lawsuit pending in Beckley,
W. VA, where Mormon officials were accused of being liable for failing to report
a case of abuse to authorities. The lawsuit seeks 750 million dollars in damages,
alleging the church has a history of generally failing to protect children from
known sexual predators.

The new affidavit states that she was unaware of the training the church had given
bishops to properly report cases of abuse. Some people allege she recanted due to
pressure. The West Virginia trial starts October 25, and Cromwell will be
subpoenaed to testify.

PARENTS

Open your mouth,
and he will bash it in.
As a young child, you knew what bash was.
Stop fighting. Kiss, make-up.
She says, she is sick of wearing your father's make-up.
A young child, you know what the make-up is, and its not kissing.
Your nose bleeds. All the time.
So you carry a rag and get accustomed to it.
You fall asleep to the music of your parents arguing.
Like the opera.
Just a private one.
The crashing of surf.
In this house there are thunder storms even in the winter.
The child learns, by the punch,
kick and the parents' screams.
To get through, you pretend that you are somewhere else, maybe the beach:

Angelic Children #2
Angelic Moments

Children are the essence of angels
happy children, blue eyes bright
blonde curls shimmering in the light of morning
play among the new grasses of spring

Nurturing, giving back to ourselves
what was taken by the RA perps
Nurturing hurt children
whose childhood was stolen by the perps
after the long silence of fear
we tell and battle the system
while struggling to protect
children and grandchildren from the same fate

Nurturing children is one of the most gratifying experiences of life.

Dear Neil,

Thank you for another year of cult, Masonic and Eastern Star information. I hope
and pray for a successful 1999 conference for S.M.A.R.T. I'll be thinking of the
speakers and discussion groups.

Thank you for sending the renewal notice. The state downsized the mental health
program. My faithful therapist of ten years, they let her go. At least she gave
me four informative years. Since I was no longer suicidal or threatening to myself
or anyone. I was dropped from the program.

After six months, there are scary times. I have been using the meditation method
and I keep reading self-help books. I'm thinking of looking into low cost therapy
for myself, but I probably won't be able to find anything. If I could only take
group therapy, my alters can't deal with more than our own problems, not everyone
else's, with all the talking. I've tried group therapy twice, had to quit both
times. So your newsletter is very important to me. I'm still plagued with
flashbacks and nightmares about the Masons and Stars. Seems too real. Permission
to print and edit.

Thank you, Nancy

enclosed
brochure or visit our website for more information.

Current members of secret organizations, current perpetrators, and/or members of
unsympathetic
organizations are excluded from the conference. This is for the protection and safety
of those in
attendance.

Many people have told us that last year's conference was the safest conference they
have ever
been to. But, this conference may not necessarily be totally safe for all survivors.
S.M.A.R.T.
recommends always bringing a support person to all conferences. If you are a
survivor of mind
control and/or ritual abuse, S.M.A.R.T. recommends that you try to bring a support
person that is
familiar with mind control techniques.

Presentation of a picture ID will be required of all conference participants, unless
prior
arrangements are made. This is for the protection of all participants. Some of the
topics discussed
may be very triggering. The conference is not intended as treatment or therapy.
