Hoffman II <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: 1956 British Conspiracy LONDON - A secret protocol has been found documenting that Britain, France and the Israelis agreed to fabricate an excuse to bomb Egypt in the 1956 Suez crisis, London's Times newspaper said Thursday. The secret agreement, known as the Sevres Protocol because it was signed at Sevres near Paris, was discovered in the Negev Desert by the makers of a BBC documentary on the Suez crisis. A British copy of the protocol was ordered destroyed by British Prime Minister Anthony Eden, the newspaper said, and a French copy by that government. The Israeli copy that has survived was signed by then-prime minister, David Ben-Gurion. Under the scheme, the Israelis attacked Egyptian positions near the Suez Canal, then Britain and France called on Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser to allow their forces into the area to ensure safe passage for ships. Given the Egyptian leader's strong nationalism, France and Britain knew that Nasser would refuse. When he did, the Israelis bombed Egypt, which was invaded by France and Britain. The protocol also documents that Eden later lied to Parliament when he denied any knowledge of Israelis' plans, the newspaper said.
