Bush is eventually confronted in the manner that Lincoln confronted Douglas in the famous Lincoln-Douglas debates. In the course of those debates Lincoln asked Douglas to reconcile Douglas' own opposition to slavery with his (then Democratic) party's support for the continuation of the institution of slavery. A similar confrontation of George W. is really in order: Gov. Bush, you say that you wish to be known as "compassionate" and yet your party today is a de facto coalition of Bankers, Clansmen and Nazi militiamen, none of whom could would be considered by others to be "compassionate." How do you reconcile this? Further, voting for you would not be simply voting for you, but for all those you would appoint to your administration. It would seem, from the track-record of Republican administrations of the recent past (including that of your father) that a vote for you would be a vote for putting Oliver North, or people just like him, back into the basement of the White House, William Casey, or someone just like him, back into the leadership of the CIA, and James Watt, or someone just like him, back into the leadership of the EPA or Dept. of the Interior (Watt, an unabashed pro-business industrialist, was the head of the Dept. of the Interior, a dept which is greatly responsible for environmental protection in this country. Reagan's first appointee to the EPA was even worse, a woman who saw her mandate as being to de facto gut the agency). It would seem further, given your party's opposition to Clinton's bombing campaign against Milosevic, that a vote for you would be a vote to make the world safe for people like Milosevic (or like Botha and Pinochet during Reagan's and Bush's tenures). So why, should anyone take you as being anything more than a "trojan horse" for ensuing GOP mahem, if you were to get elected? Why should we trust you? Your campaign to perhaps try to save the GOP from truly becoming America's NAZI party of the 21st century may be admirable. But you may lose _that fight_ anyway, and it is entirely possible that your "compassionate conservative" campaign is simply a ruse from start to finish to begin with -- a last gasp effort to try to make the GOP pallatable to a populace that the GOP does not really represent, or even care to represent. Why should Americans today believe that you are anything more than simply a frontman for what has become an evil party? Fr.
