First, the Allied appropriation of the Gehlen-Apparat has been well-known for
many years. Immediately following the end of the war, Allied Intelligence (OSS
and MI6) absorbed Gehlen's network in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union
intact, getting a head start on the Cold War. The Gehlen organization
subsequently formed the basis of what became the Bundesnachrichtendienst
(BND), the West German Federal Intelligence Service.
Second, ODESSA (Organisation der ehemaligen SS-Angehörigen, "Organization of
Former SS Members") was a relatively minor element in the so-called "Fourth
Reich." It was elevated in the public mind by Frederick Forsyth's novel *The
Odessa File*, which, while a good read that was made into a chilling movie,
drastically overstated the role of ODESSA in "rescuing" Nazis. The group known
as Die Spinne ("the Spider") was much more effective in evacuating such big
names as Eichmann and Mengele, and had the direct, active support and
participation of high-ranking Vatican officials such as Bishop Alois Hudal,
who supplied "refugee" and even Vatican diplomatic passports for fugitive war
criminals.
I'm not denying that Nazi assets were taken over by U.S. and British
intelligence. Obviously they were. Operation Paperclip is only the tip of the
iceberg...for example, when the U.S. Army's Special Forces were first created
in the early 1950's, their members were drawn largely from the ranks of former
Waffen-SS and anti-Soviet partisans, including the viciously Fascist UPA
(Ukrainian Partisan Army). The UPA was the direct descendant of local
Ukrainian formations created to cooperate with occupying German forces,
particularly the infamous SS-Sonderkommando ("special detachments"), which
were responsible for rounding up and exterminating local Jewish populations.
Large numbers of Ukrainian (not to mention Baltic) collaborators joined the
Waffen-SS late in the war when "national" formations were created to
supplement the depleted Wehrmacht. When they were subsequently recruited for
the Special Forces, no attempt was made to winnow out war criminals; indeed,
the intent of the U.S. Army commanders appears to have been to use those same
individuals against the new enemy in precisely the same way...
