Orlin Grabbe</A> ----- ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Today's Lesson From How Real Is Real?--Confusion, Disinformation, Communication by Paul Watzlawick In the topsy-turvy world of deliberate disinformation, the basic rule, to paraphrase Masterman, is that, rather than suppressing all enemy agents and thereby forcing the enemy to rebuild his spy nets, it is cheaper and more effective to "turn them around." This facilitates the detection of newly arrived agents, since they are usually instructed to contact an already identified spy; provides highly important insights into the enemy's modus operandi; and gives information about enemy codes and ciphers. The tasks assigned to these agents further reveal the nature and direction of the enemy's intentions. For example, when questions about ground and beach defences stopped, the British concluded that the Germans had abandoned their plans to invade Great Britain. And by feeding the enemy the right kind of wrong but believable information through a turned around agent, his plans can be influenced. The last and perhaps most important function is defined by Masterman as follows: Finally, we are in a position to deceive the enemy.
