"Ethnically-plural states?" Since when has East Timor been part of a
so-called Indonesian plurality (any more than the Albanians were part of a
so-called Yugoslavian plurality, or Tibet part of a Chinese plurality, and
we could go on)? In 1975, after 400 years of domination by the Portuguese,
East Timor's scant chance at independence, of creating its own plurality,
was squashed by Henry Kissinger and Gerald Ford, who gave Suharto the green
light for invasion, occupation, and a genocide that claimed more lives
per-capita than that inflicted upon Cambodia by the Khmer Rouge. Now, after
being led down the garden path to a mandated independence by the UN and the
West, they are being abandoned once again in the name of political and
economic realism. Parts of the Left, it seems from this post, have now
adopted their own form of Kissingerian realism: allow the East Timorese be
slaughtered by the Indonesians so they won't be exploited by the IMF.
Following the logic of this post, by allowing the Indonesians to murder,
kill, maim, and torture as the wish, we are helping to preserve their
national sovereignty. Fight the IMF! Support Genocide! 2 + 2 = 5!
