# Trial of Scientologists begins. MARSEILLE, France (AP) - A controversial
trial of 7 members of the Church of Scientology began in southern France
but was immediately bogged down by a scandal over missing evidence. The
Scientologists' defense demanded the trial be postponed because of the
"dreadful climate" created after relevant documents vanished from court.
Scientology leaders came under investigation in 1990 for fraud, illegal
practice of medicine & premeditated violence. The two latter charges have
now been dropped. Founded in 1954 by science-fiction writer L.Ron Hubbard,

"The Christian kids -- it's time for them to stand. I can guarantee the
kids of Columbine are standing. Why wait for the atrocity to happen?"

hand-hewn logs, Sister Marilyn Baird points to the cramped attic space
above a straw-mattress bed where Joseph Smith said an angel appeared to
him one autumn night in 1823. Sightseers crowd onto the rear porch as
she directs their gaze to a nearby grove. While praying there in 1820,
