-Caveat Lector- British, Argentine Hold Exercise LONDON (AP) - Britain and Argentina began their first joint military exercise Monday since the two nations fought a war over the Falkland Islands in 1982, the Ministry of Defense said. The two countries are teaming up for four days of exercises in the South Atlantic to practice search and rescue operations. Admiral Sir Michael Boyce said the exercises were ``a good example of the way in which defense cooperation between U.K. and Argentina can produce real benefits not just for our armed forces but for many people who depend on their skills and effectiveness.'' While Britain and Argentina have cooperated in military exercises since the Falklands War, those past efforts were under the auspices of the United Nations and also involved forces from other countries. This is the first joint exercise in which only the two nations are participating. Relations between the two countries have improved steadily since Britain won the 10-week war by driving Argentine invaders off the rocky South Atlantic archipelago. Argentina still claims the islands, which it calls the Malvinas. The two nations restored diplomatic relations in 1990. In the past year, Argentine President Carlos Menem paid a state visit to Britain, and Prince Charles visited Argentina. Last month, commercial flights were restored between Argentina and the islands for the first time since the war.
