I was the one who posted that, and it's based on the FACT that
crucifixion was a form of execution practiced solely by the Roman state,
for high crimes and misdemeanors; petty criminals were not crucified;
neither did the Roman authorities particularly give a damn about
doctrinal disputes in local religions, e.g. they'd hardly execute someone
for being a heretic in what they considered a petty local religion, they
wouldn't even execute someone they considered a 'rabble rouser' who they
considered a menace to public order...

The local authorities could not execute criminals via crucifixion; the
fact that Jesus the Christ was crucified points to the Romans considering
him a powerful enemy of the state; indeed, the crime he was charged with
was nailed to the cross he was hung on: "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the
Jews" (INRI); and THAT is why they executed him, because he (or his
followers) considered Jesus to be the rightful ruler in Jerusalem, and
the Romans considered him a threat to the state, and feared a civil
insurrection and revolution.
