-Caveat Lector- http://www.phnompenhdaily.com/26-08-99t5.htm Namhong calls for China-Japan counterweight American ambitions worry region Cambodia's call for a cohesive partnership between China and Japan Underscores regional fears of an all powerful United States enforcing its unwelcome will over Asian nations. Hor Namhong's words were diplomatic. The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation called on Asia's rival powers to bury their differences and form a power bloc to match the United States and Europe. "China has a powerful military military and Japan has a strong economy. "The two powers should join forces to make the Asia-Pacific region as strong as Europe and the United States," he said. Namhong told Japanese academics last week " Cambodia wishes to see the region join forces" instead of quarreling over small issues. Analysts say the reference to Europe was incidental, but the target is the United States. Cambodia has been the victim of US whims and fancies more than once. Its carpet bombing on civilian targets helped the Khmer Rouge to come into power. The subsequent isolation of the forces which ended the killing fields is another example. Washington played a key role in keeping Cambodia's seat vacant after the event of July 1997 and is now the major backer of foreign-dominated trial for remaining Khmer Rouge leaders. Its agreed that a trial should be held, but the feeling among Khmers is that it should be handled gently to ensure the fragile peace-boat is not rocked. Cambodia cannot, and according to Hun Sen and Prince Norodom Ranariddh, will not allow it to be rocked. The United States also tried to keep Myanmar out of Asian, and many suspect that Cambodia's formal entry was delayed due to US pressure. Washington has also been accused of funding a movement which ousted long serving Suharto as president of Indonesia, and Vice President Al Gore openly supported a move to oust Mahathir Mohamad as Prime Minister in Malaysia. The US, which once accused the communist bloc of exporting revolution, is doing the same with moral and financial support for alleged reform groups. Even during the Cold War years, the US ambition for power was evident. It fought to divide the Korean peninsula, which so remains until this day. Washington got a lashing in the attempt in Vietnam, which had united south and north. The US has also refused to sign the treaty that will keep Southeast Asia nuclear free. Secretary of State Madeline Alright, in all her statements, had made it clear that US interests came first. That policy is graphically seen in US view of the One-China policy. It is now flexing its muscle on China over Beijing's efforts to reing-in the maverick province from separating from the mainland, a purely internal affair. Last week, China declared that she was battle ready to deal with the Kuomintang government if Taiwan attempts to breakaway, and prepared to meet the conse-quences-possibility of US intervention. Namhong's statement comes at the time when there is real fear of US aggression, and possibly the region being engulfed into conflict. The disintegration of the Soviet Union has become the biggest threat to democracy, unless weaker states accept an understanding that the term means American domination. Many are beginning to believe that the US has become an atheist, evil empire, something once the Kremlin was accused of.
