-Caveat Lector- > Besides if there was no > one eating it what on earth would we do with all the cattle?? Let me them roam free as in India :) Actually that could solve a number of problems associated with the meat industry. Free range cattle would be healthier and hence healthier to eat and it would likely make most of us more cognizant of the rights of animals something which it is easy to ignore when most 'farm' animals these days seem to be confined in tiny cages and hidden from public scrutiny. The meat industry has carefully reduced livestock to an inanimate resource in many people's eyes and consequently the majority of the public is less vigilent in re the health problems arising from modern techno-methods of meat production. If we returned to more natural methods there would be very little health risk in eating meat. Of course I doubt that the American/Canadian meat industry is about to let ethics get in the way of profits.
