The group from Bristol demonstrated a group of mechanisms which they say increase the risk of cancer for people living near power cables. Prof Denis Henshaw, who led the team, said "a new clear picture emerged" about the effect of power cables after research dating back 40 years in some cases was uncovered and added to more recent results. The claims were immediately challenged by the electricity industry. Dr John Swanson, research engineer for the National Grid Company, said: "We have now had over 20 years of research on this issue and over £500 million spent on it. When you get a group of scientists to look at that, the conclusion is that it has not established a health risk." Prof Henshaw presented his paper yesterday to a conference at Bristol University of international experts on the health effects of electromagnetic fields. He said he had found the cause of the problem with power lines. The professor claims that the cables interact with pollutant aerosols, airborne droplets that contain cancer-causing agents. This increases the risk to people living nearby. He said: "We know that there is an increased risk of childhood cancer associated with traffic density and that vehicle exhaust contains a cocktail of known and potential carcinogens. This is airborne pollution." Prof Henshaw said airborne pollution was either a gas or was carried around in aerosols, minute particles that can be breathed in. He said: "Aerosols may carry carcinogens and viruses and bacteria," he said. "Generally that doesn't matter because the human body is designed to cope with them. But when they are disease-carrying or pollution-carrying aerosols present in large numbers we have a problem." His team claims that the action of the electromagnetic field from the power line can lead to increased exposure to such aerosols. The scientist said the cause of the problem was threefold. The aerosol particles oscillate in fields around the power lines, increasing their ability to stick to the skin. The electromagnetic field from the power cable can also cause aerosols to congregate. The Bristol team claims that their most important finding involves corona ions, charges from the power lines that can be measured more than two miles away. They claim that these ions also interact with airborne pollutants and that they increase the dose of pollutants that humans can inhale. Yesterday's theory was a result of research into scientific theories going back 40 years and new research by the Bristol team. This involved experiments near a National Grid line in a farm field outside Bristol. Prof Henshaw said: "In future research we should be able to measure easily the individual electric field exposure both in case studies of people living near power lines and in control groups. This is not a scare story. We hope it can be seen as the initiation of a public debate." A spokesman for the Electricity Association said: "Much of the information put forward by Prof Henshaw is old and has been criticised. His ideas do not appear to amount to a mechanism affecting health." © Copyright of Telegraph Group Limited 1998. . www.ctrl.org DECLARATION & DISCLAIMER ========== CTRL is a discussion & informational exchange list.
