To: undisclosed-recipients:; Walter Mosley by Mathew Forstater 6 March 2000 Just picked up Walter Mosley's _Workin' on the Chain Gang: Shaking off the Dead Hand of History_ (Library of Contemporary Thought, Ballantine Books, 2000). Mosley is the author of the Easy Rawlins Mystery series and other fiction. The worthy quotable material in this is much more than I can offer here but just to give a feeling for the flavor: "We have defeated the democratic process, living instead within an economic system that perverts our labor in order to create riches...a system that any other creature would see...as barbaric...For over a hundred years the practice of slavery has been outlawed in the West. But people still slave...Our labor binds us to systems that see us only as units of value or expense...Our labor is designed to maintain the values of our economy. A stick of butter, an ounce of lead, a human life--each of these units conveys value in our world. Not human values but the values of the system that rules us...Class has a prominent role in the lives of *all* Americans [not only African Americans]...The juggernaut of capitalism, having broken the bonds of its imprisonment--national borders--exacts its toll in an equal opportunity manner. It is the nature of capitalism to apply its value system to everything. Within this system all values are interchangeable. Three ounces of gold, let us say, are equal in value to two and a half tons of sugar...One year of physical labor is (one hopes) equal to the resources it takes to keep that worker working for 260 out of 365 days...the value of life itself fluctuates according to the costs of production. The economic system, the system that rules so much of our lives, does not, probably *cannot*, value human labor above any other commodity or resource. Under the weight of this system a man's labor is no more valuable than its equivalent cost in pounds of potatoes...Capitalism has no humanity. All that exists in the capitalist bible is the margin of profit, the market share..." (pp. 3-12) Chapter six is "Defining the Great Enemy: The Margin of Profit." www.ctrl.org DECLARATION & DISCLAIMER ========== CTRL is a discussion & informational exchange list.
