RALPH NADER'S DIRTY LITTLE SECRET

Move over Al Gore and George W. Bush. Here comes Ralph Nader.
Mr. Sanctimonious has declared himself the Green Party presidential
standard-bearer. He hopes to get 5 percent of the national vote in November.

Nader's message is just as predictable this time around as it was in 1996,
when he launched a half-hearted presidential campaign: "It is time to stand
up to the rich and powerful corporate interests that dictate policy in this
country."

No surprises there: Nader has built his career on bashing corporate America
over alleged product liabilities. And he's among the most strident foes of
tort reform, opposing any and all efforts to limit the multimillion-dollar
jury verdicts that enrich a tiny band of tort lawyers.

But one thing is different about this year's Nader candidacy. In '96, Nader
limited his total campaign spending to just $5,000 and refused to accept any
contributions, charging that money has "corrupted" politics. This time
around, he intends to raise "millions" in campaign funds.

This means, just maybe, that the veil of secrecy that has long shrouded
Nader's own finances may be lifted.

That $5,000 limit last time around exempted Nader from filing
financial-disclosure forms. But if he runs a "real campaign" this year,
he'll be subject to the same disclosure requirements as his rivals. Nader's
self-portrait paints him as a do-gooder, toiling for the common

welfare while eschewing life's comforts. But an exhaustive 1990
investigation by Forbes magazine revealed something else altogether.

Rather than living on a meager salary in a "simple" basement apartment with
an address kept hidden even from his closest aides, Forbes discovered, Nader
has for decades resided in a sumptuous, multimillion-dollar Washington
townhouse owned by his sister.

As far back as the early '70s, Nader was earning $250,000 annually. Now he
makes up to 100 speeches a year -- for five-figure sums. And his supposedly
ragtag volunteer outfit is an empire of 29 organizations with combined
annual revenues of more than $80 million.

As for his funding, Nader has long refused to hold himself to the same
standards of full disclosure that he demands of corporate interests. But
Forbes discovered four main sources of Nader's income: Public donations,
government grants (funneled by Naderite officials), left-wing foundations
and -- most particularly -- the plaintiff-lawyer lobby.

Indeed, one Florida tort lawyer told Forbes: "We are what supports Nader. We
support him overtly, covertly, in every way possible. We give him a huge
percentage of what he raises."

Nader intends to spend the rest of this campaign season lecturing the
American people about the corrupting evils of money in politics. It will be
interesting to see whether, at any point, Nader plans to look in the mirror.
