Bush to Clarify His Position on Life WASHINGTON, May 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Speculation about George W. Bush's pro- life stance is increasing this week, as his decision on a running mate draws nearer. Others who claim to be pro-life are already satisfied with Bush's stance on abortion. Some contend that with the future makeup of the United States Supreme Court at hand, a Bush White House would protect the nation's legislative powers, usurped by Roe v. Wade, from further erosion by the Court. Others contend that Bush is the lesser of two evils, the greater evil being his opponent, Al Gore. ``I do not totally agree with any of these statements,'' Judie Brown, president of American Life League, wrote today in a personal letter to Bush. ``While you take a pragmatic posture that allows for children to be killed in some cases, Gore never met an act of abortion he didn't like and says so. But the fact is that both of you sanction the killing of innocent babies in the womb.'' Brown pointed out that on Bush's web site, he states that ``all children should be welcomed into life.'' However, Bush admits a number of exceptions to abortion and continues to avoid the essential issue of personhood. ``It occurs to me, Governor Bush, that perhaps you might make one fundamental point rather than the continued flow of rhetoric,'' Brown wrote. ``If it is true that you consider yourself to be pro- life ... then perhaps you should define who you mean when you talk about children.'' Brown asked Bush to re-evaluate his position by considering three questions: 1) Do you know that a human being-a person-exists at conception (fertilization)? 2) Do you recognize that a person is always and in every case equally valuable? 3) Do you truly think that the act of abortion kills a person just like you? ``If you answer these three questions in the affirmative,'' Brown wrote, ``then why don't you articulate your view that to be pro-life is to recognize the person in law, in public policy, and in the culture? This would mean NOT saying that you discriminate against children because of rape, incest or alleged threats to the life of the mother.''
